Shasta Kart Club, Redding, California
April 23-24, 2005
by Chris Scribner
Once again weather played a role in the mood of the pits and the track surface. After Friday practice had ended a storm swept through Shasta Kart Club blowing tents over and washing away any rubber laid down on the track surface. Saturday started out wet in the morning but would drench everything once again in the night and then on-off showers would keep the below average of 145 entries in check throughout Sunday.
Saturday's action had the excitement of the weekend. Every class racing had lead changes. Cody Kay made a pass on Dennis Simmiovich for the win in Jr. 1 Animal Super Sportsman. C.J. Mooneyham was the fastest all day in Jr. 2 Animal Super Sportsman as was Steve Slacks in National Cup Masters. After getting D.O'd in qualifying for weight Neil Alberico drove from last to second in the heat but used up his kart allowing Travis Greco to get a 2 second victory over Alberico in the main. Scribner Plastics driver Chris Scribner made a three wide pass to get around both Scott Shapiro and Brice Clark for the win in Super Sportsman but in Junior 80 Shifter Alex Shutte had just enough to keep Colton Filkill at bay in second for the win. In Junior Sportsman Dylan Albiani put together a great run for Invader Karts showing his strength all day to bring home the win at ease. Crash fest in the 80 Limited on the start gave a chance to Davey Mead to show his driving skill in the rain on slicks, as he would win by a margin of 8 seconds.
Sunday the weather was mixed all day. Practice and Qualifying were both held in the rain with the heats in the dry and half the mains in the rain. Cody Mckinney walked away in 80 Masters however in Junior Superbox Giles O'kane would do the same, as he was the only driver to gamble without rain tires. Mathias Kattanek put together a great run for the Super Sportsman Heavy win. National Cup was mixed with half the field on rains and half on slicks. Just as the field left the grid heavy rain came separating the field on the start. Nick Dunn led the first half the race before having an off track excursion allowing Zachary Dericco to get his first win as a senior driver. Mike Wright got the win in Formula 80 Masters and P.H. Giffels would win in the 100cc National Cup. Next race for Region 11 will be in Reno at the Northern Nevada Kart Club on May 14-15.
